We are sad to announce that Mary Sue Podczervinski (Leisner), 72, passed away on September 22, 2023
after a long fight with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to Joseph and Clare
Leisner on February 24, 1951.
Sue graduated from Northern Michigan University, where she studied speech pathology and education.
After graduating, she worked as a speech therapist in Lincoln Park, MI, supporting elementary school
students across the school district. Sue exuded patience and kindness, which undoubtedly positively
impacted the students she worked with. During this time, she met her husband, Dan. They married on
November 22, 1975, in Redford, MI.
She was a loving and dedicated parent. After she had her two children, Sara and Daniel, she worked
part-time to spend more time with her kids. Over the years, Sue worked as a substitute teacher in
Livonia, MI, at several schools. For over ten years, Sue worked at the Livonia YMCA, where she enrolled
new members and staffed the front desk.
Sue valued wellness and was always active. She did yoga and was an avid runner and swimmer. She
enjoyed reading and always had a book on her nightstand, usually a mystery by Mary Higgins Clark. Sue
inspired her kids to value health and altruism. She volunteered at numerous organizations, including the
Salvation Army, Marian House, and Humane Society. During the holiday season, Sue could be found
ringing the donation bell in frigid weather or wrapping gifts to support charities.
After Dan retired in 2003, Sue and Dan moved to Colorado Springs, CO, with their dog Millie. They spent
much time exploring Colorado and traveling to beach destinations. Sue loved the ocean, and Sue and
Dan spent many evenings walking beaches in Costa Rica, Florida, and the Caribbean. In Colorado, Sue
was a substitute teacher at Monument Academy.
She is survived by her husband (Dan), son (Daniel), daughter (Sara), three granddaughters (Chloe, Regan,
and Bella), two grandsons (Julian and Theo), daughter-in-law (Kristin), and son-in-law (Andy Clawson).
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, two sisters (Nancy Maynard, Kitty Leisner), and brother
(Richard Leisner). She will be missed immensely. To honor her giving spirit, we ask that in lieu of flowers,
donations are made to the Alzheimer's Association and the Humane Society.
A funeral mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Monument, CO and a memorial service will occur at a
later date.
