Born in the village of Dalem, France, she was a cherished woman whose life was a tapestry of devotion, family and cultural heritage. Growing up amidst the pastoral beauty of rural France, Marie’s childhood was steeped in the rhythms of farm life, where she tended to chickens and goats, helped maintain a large vegetable garden, an apple orchard and hay fields. Her father, Pierre Schoug, was a coal miner, while her mother, Barbara, embraced the demanding role of a farm wife. Marie shared her formative years with two younger brothers, Hubert and Andre, in a close-knit family surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Growing up near the German border, Marie’s life was profoundly shaped by the historical upheavals of World War II. Despite the challenges, with her Catholic faith she cultivated a resilient spirit that guided her through those tumultuous times and all her life.
In 1963, Marie married John Charley in Metz, France, and in 1964 his Air Force career brought them to the United States. Despite the distance, Marie remained deeply connected to her French roots, making regular visits to France for family reunions and maintaining her fluency in both French and German. She pursued a career in the burgeoning field of high-tech manufacturing, reflecting her adaptability and forward-thinking mindset. Retiring from Ampex Corporation, she was very proud of all her accomplishments.
Marie leaves behind a daughter, Nadine, a granddaughter, Andrea and her husband James, and three great grandchildren, Hayden and her husband Tyler, Logan and Brock. Her home was always warm and welcoming with the aroma of baked goods. She was known for her buttery Spritz cookies and her delectable Brioche. Her devotion to family was evident in the festive traditions she upheld, particularly during Christmas and Easter.
Marie’s home was a reflection of her impeccable taste and love for interior decorating. Her garden, the most beautiful in the neighborhood, was a source of pride and garnered many compliments.
Marie’s life was a harmonious blend of devotion, family, personal passions, and cultural richness. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and she was a testament to a life well-lived. She is deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
