Maria “Mary” Hermelinda Cabello was born August 21, 1932, in the Texas Rio Grande
Valley to Jesus M Garcia and Dora Hernandez. She was the third of five children.
Mary’s family made their home in Corpus Christi, TX. After studying bookkeeping at Del
Mar College, she began working in retail, where she excelled in sales. She soon
became interested in neighbor and family friend, Zeferino “Zefe” R. Cabello, Jr.
Mary and Zefe were married in Corpus Christi in 1955 and as new followers of Christ,
were about to begin a 34-year career in ministry following completion of Zefe’s
theological studies at Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachie, TX.
Together over three decades, they pastored churches in El Paso, TX; Saginaw, MI;
South Bend, IN; Plymouth, IN and Corpus Christ, TX. Mary also supported her husband
while he served as Superintendent of Midwest Latin American District of the Assemblies
of God (A/G) for 12 years.
In addition to assisting in pastoral ministry in the 1970s, Mary took the lead in planting
and pastoring a church in Plymouth, IN. She loved interacting with people in need and
often volunteered with the local Red Cross as a transport driver for hospital patients.
She also continued working in retail sales off and on while living in South Bend, IN.
Soon after, Mary and Zefe returned to their hometown of Corpus Christi, TX and
pastored at Templo Elim A/G. Following nine years of pastoral work, they returned to
district administrative work after Zefe accepted the role of vice-superintendent of the
Gulf Latin American District A/G, based in San Antonio, TX. He served for a year in this
role before succumbing to a 14-month battle with cancer. Mary moved back to the
Midwest to be near her sons and served 25 years as store manager for the Sweet Spot
Racquet Shop in Mishawaka, IN, her son Noe’s tennis pro shop.
Mary lived in seven cities during her lifetime, most recently in Colorado Springs, CO
with her daughter, Nydia, and son-in-law, Mike Teter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings (Adolio, Arnoldo, Elva and Olga),
and granddaughter, Adriana (Noe and Tracy). She is survived by her brother, Alfredo;
her children and their spouses: Noe (Tracy), Eddy (Kathy), Edgar (Cynthia), Nydia
(Mike); 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Rev. Z.R. Cabello Scholarship
Fund, a fund that provides college scholarships to students from the Assemblies of God
(A/G) Midwest Latin American District pursuing pastoral and theological studies.
