Margaret Ross Obituary

Margaret Hanzl Ross (Margie early and Marge later in life) passed away at the University of Colorado Anshcutz Medical Center on February 28, 2023, after a short illness. Marge was born on December 8, 1949, in Cleveland Ohio to George Ughrin (1912-1990) and Cecilia Hanzl (1916-2006). She graduated from Nazareth Academy - Parma Heights, Ohio in 1967 as the class salutatorian. She then went to Saint Francis College in Loretto, PA and graduated with a degree in physics in 1971.

After College, Marge taught at Nazareth Academy and later worked for the US Postal Service. In 1980, Marge joined the United States Air Force and went to San Antonio, TX for officer training. There, she met her future husband, Mark Ross, in the same commissioning program. The two were assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB following commissioning as  second lieutenants. Marge obtained a bachelor's in aeronautical engineering in 1982. The two were assigned to the San Antonio Air Logistics Center as engineers. They were married in 1983 in San Antonio, TX and their two sons, Steven and Jeremy were born in San Antonio.

Marge served Fifteen years in the USAF and retired in 1995 as a Major. During her Air Force career Marge was the T-39 Structural Integrity Program Manager at San Antonio ALC, the Sensor Fused Weapon Program Manager at Eglin AFB and served as an executive in a Program Element Office at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. During her tour of duty at Eglin AFB, Marge earned a master's in public administration from the University of West Florida in 1991. Marge retired from the USAF in 1995.

Marge was an exceptional athlete. In college, she played both basketball and tennis at Saint Francis. Softball was her greatest sports love. She played at the highest level on championship teams in the Cleveland area. In the Air Force, she played on the Logistic Command team that competed in, and won, the USAF softball championship. 

Marge was a skilled photographer. She shot high school sporting events in the Dayton, Ohio area earning many honors and accolades and was published numerous times in local and regional publications.

Marge also enjoyed traveling and often combined traveling and photography to capture stunning imagery from across the country. Her images still sell on several of the popular stock sites.

One of Marge's greatest pleasures was her four beautiful grandchildren. She cherished each and loved them dearly.

After the USAF retirement, Marge worked as a benefits administrator in the Ross Group, Inc. a company founded by her husband. She retired from there in 2021.

Marge is survived by her husband, her two natural sons, Steven Michael Ross (Erin Strawn) and Jeremy David Ross (Bridget Loper), her stepson Alec Allen Ross (Seda Kaya), her sister Cate Moon, her grandchildren Annabelle Ross, Piper Ross, Sage Ross, and Francis Ross, by nephews Ben Eugrin, Vinny Toth and Jory Calanni and by numerous cousins and other relatives and friends.
