Eugene Ronald Coryell was born on Sept. 14, 1929 in Richmond, California
After High School he joined the National Guard with a few friends. In 1948 he
moved to the Los Angeles area to begin training for the Plumbing business.
However, in 1950 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was told to report almost
immediately to Camp Cook in Santa Monica, California for training. Then on to
Japan where he was assigned to be the driver for his Battalion Commader. After a
few months he had the option to receive training as a cook, which he decided to
do. He cooked for officers in Japan and Korea until he was honorably discharged
in 1952 from Fort Ord, California. From there back to Los Angeles where he
continued his work as a commercial and industrial plumber.
In March of 1953 Gene met Joanne L’Heureux (LaRue) at church in Ingelwood,
Calif. Who became his wife on January 30, 1954. The welcomed their first
daughter, Susan in Feb. 1956, their 2 sons, Randy in Feb 1958, Ronnie in
November 1959. In 1961 they left Los Angeles and moved to the San Francisco
Bay Area, purchasing his parents Foster’s Freeze Ice Cream store in El Sobrante
and later in Pinole. While living there 2 more daughters were born, Cheryl Lynne
in June 1968 and Carole Anne in March 1970.
After 13 years in business they moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon. There Gene built
a home with the help of his 2 boys, where they lived for 5 years. From there the
family moved to Eugene, Oregon where they lived for 40 years and Gene returned
to his work as a plumber.
He looked forward to going to church each week where he volunteered as an
usher. He also enjoyed meeting with his friends at a mens group called Second
Wind, especially when it was time for the coffee and cookies, which he made sure
he never missed.
He enjoyed watching sports and especially rooting for his Oregon Ducks!
His precious daughter, Cheryl left for heaven in 2018 due to cancer. Shortly after,
in 2019, Gene and Joanne moved to Colorado Springs to be with the oldest
daughter, Susan and her husband, Ed. Gene was grateful for Academy Christian
Church where he worshipped and especially Pastor Bryan.
