Duane Slocum Obituary

DUANE CLINTON SLOCUM 1936-2024

A man of faith, a loving husband and good friend to those who knew him.

Duane Clinton Slocum, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on April 2, 2024 peacefully in his sleep with his wife Bobbie by his side.

Born in Circleville, Kansas to Virginia Irene Cunningham and Truman Kenneth Slocum on May 26, 1936, Duane was the second oldest of 7 children and attended school in a one room schoolhouse. He left Circleville right out of high school and joined the Navy, as a Navy corpsman he was stationed in California and sent to Japan.

Duane met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Lund in 1956 at his 20th birthday party. They were married on November 17, 1956 in the navel chapel in Corona, California.

He was sent to Japan after their wedding and Bobbie joined him after she graduated from High School. Bobbie likes to tell everyone that out of the two of them, she is the seaman because she traveled by shin to and from Japan while Duane flew and never spent time on a ship.

Duane and Bobbie returned to California and started their family. They had 5 children, one of them which passed away as a young child.

After leaving the navy Duane went to California Polytechnic State University and earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Human resources. He spent 40 years working in HR with many different companies which took the family to Texas and Colorado.

Duane was an active member of his church. He served in many different capacities. He especially loved his time as a bishop and member of the bishopric in the young single adult congregation in  Colorado Springs and devoted his time and energy to many LDS cadets at the Air Force Academy.

Duane loved to play softball and basketball. He also loved to hunt, garden and at the end of his life arrange flowers. He and Bobbie were able to travel all over the world and especially loved their time in Hungary.

He was a devoted husband and good father and was always known to wait on Bobbie.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, his son Jay, and 2 siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara Jean, his 4 children; Terri, Tami, Troy, and Jason, 20 grandchildren and 43 2/3 great grandchildren.

His siblings: Wendell, Beverly, Melvin, Linda, Mary and Peggy.
