Lt. Col. Douglas (Doug) F. Van Allen, USAF, Ret.

Doug lost his valiant battle with mesothelioma, and the world lost a quiet, loving soul.
Doug was born in Rochester, NY, to Dorethea (Dubie) and Harvey Van Allen. After high
school, he worked briefly at Kodak Park until joining the U.S. Air Force Aviation Cadet
Program in 1959. After his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant and an Aeronautical
Rating of Navigator, he was assigned to Homestead Air Force Base, FL, as a Boeing B-
52H Stratofortress strategic bomber crew member. His entire operational career was
with the Strategic Air Command in intelligence and operational reconnaissance with
assignments at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan; Hellenikon AB, Greece and several tours
at Offutt AFB, NE. He met his wife, Mary, at Offutt in 1971, and they married Nov. 4,
1972. He retired from the Air Force in June 1980.
The family moved to Monument, CO, and Doug worked a second career with Martin
Marietta (now Lockheed Martin) as a Program Planner for numerous programs. His
second retirement was in July 2002.
He was a skilled woodworker and an avid wildlife photographer. He volunteered with the
American Red Cross, deploying in Colorado as well as Texas, Louisiana, New York,
Arizona, Florida and Georgia. He also worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
program (VITA), providing free tax preparation to the local community.
Doug was predeceased by his parents and the entire former generation of his family. He
is survived by his wife, Mary, daughters Elizabeth Van Allen, Jean (Terry) Duggan, Lisa
(Jacob) Bowers, brother Harvey (Karen), grandchildren Celia and Adelyn Bowers, plus beloved
nieces, cousins, and great-nephews.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 9 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson
St., Monument, CO: 9:30 am visitation, 10 am Rosary, 10:30 am Mass, 11:30 a.m.
reception at the Parish Ministry Center, Interment at 2 pm at Pikes Peak National
Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd., Colorado Springs, CO.
